1. a) any naval officer of any one of the four highest ranks. b) an officer in the U.S. Navy ranking next below a fleet admiral and next above a vice admiral. c) an officer in the British navy ranking next below an Admiral of the Fleet.
2. a) Especially British. the commander of a fleet of fishing or merchant ships. b) the commander in chief of the navy of a country.
3. either of two species of large, colorful butterflies originally found only in Europe, but now also found in America. It has greatly reduced forelegs.
4. a flagship. Abbr.: Adm.
